Article and News Distribution Tips
January 31, 2009
As an operator of a professional article distribution service, I get questions all the time from customers about SEO, article marketing, link building, and press releases. It would probably take a whole book to address all the questions in details. But here are some of the most common questions that I’ve encountered. Hopefully, you find them useful. Q: Why perform article marketing at all? You do article marketing for 2 reasons: direct traffic from the links in your author resource box and for SEO purposes. When you write and submit your articles for publication, you are allowed to include 2 or 3 links at the end of the articles. These are what we usually refer to as “back links”. The more back links you have from authority and well established sites, the higher rankings your web pages will get. Therefore, article marketing is one of the best way to give you long term traffic. You get traffic from the articles AND the search engines month after month. Q: What is the difference between article submission and press releases? Traditionally, press releases are used as stories to capture the attention of news agents, in the hope that the stories will be published and the business owners get free publicity. However, the game is very different on the Internet. Press release on the Internet is becoming more and more about link building. Press releases are sold based on active links included in the press releases. In other words, if you want live links in your press releases, be prepared to pay a price for it. In this aspect, press releases and article submission are similar. Both can be used to build back links for SEO purposes. However, news releases are often indexed by news engines such as Google News, Yahoo News, and MSN News. These news aggregators are responsible for delivering news to millions of online visitors each month. So if you get your news releases into those indexes, you will get immediate exposure; at least until your news becomes outdated. If you are just starting out, you should issue press releases and do article distributions for maximum results. Press releases will get you the immediate attention you need, and the articles will get you long term traffic. Q: Does article marketing really work for SEO? I get this question a lot. And the short answer is, “Yes!” I don’t care what the experts say. I only believe in the results that I see. Time after time, customers have reported improved in search engine rankings after submitting just a few articles to several hundred article directories. It is not uncommon to see an internal page ranking in page 7 or 10 of the search results to jump to page 1 or 2 in just a few short weeks. If you can get 1 page to rank, you can get 10 pages to rank. That’s how you can continue to scale your traffic. Q: How many articles should I submit per week? For every website you promote, you should shoot for at least 250 articles to get any kind of viable traction. Anything less than that, you may not get enough traffic for your internet business to work. It takes time and patience to write and submit 250 articles. Logically speaking, you should be able to write 10 decent articles per day. That depends on how fast you can write. If you want to go the fast route, outsource all your article writing. In fact, there are tons of examples of highly successful internet marketers who are earning a good income just by using article marketing alone. Pretty impressive stuff. So there is little doubt that article marketing does indeed work!

Does Google Have a Golden Rule?
January 26, 2009
In order to keep Google fed, webmasters have to jump through more than one set of hoops. When it comes to getting top rankings in Google’s Index or SERPs, there are 200 of these hoops or ranking factors. And if you want to play in Google’s ballpark, you have to try and master the majority of them.
Until now that is, maybe it’s just me but doesn’t it appear that Google is suddenly opening up about its whole ranking procedures and what they expect from webmasters. Maybe the answers have always been there, we just couldn’t find them. However, a more likely scenario is that someone high up within Google made the decision to be more transparent with it comes to webmasters and how much they would tell them.
In recent Webmaster live chats, Googlers Matt Cutts, Maile Ohye, among others… have been honestly answering questions about what Google requires webmasters to do regarding their sites. These are Q&A sessions dealing with the “burning questions” webmasters have had for years concerning Google and what Google wants. Do a search in Google for “Google Webmaster Help | Google Groups” if you will to find these sessions.
Since I run several modest sites on webmaster tools and Internet marketing I am approached by more than a few people who want me to help them build their online site or business. One of the major issues that always comes up somewhere in the process (usually phrased in different ways) is this question:
What does Google want? What does Google expect of my site? How do I get ranked high in Google?
Mainly because my chief goal is to help these webmasters understand Google better in order to build a profitable site; I have struggled and puzzled over this question for years.
What is Google’s Golden Rule?
Many experts believe it is related to relevancy - the key to getting high rankings is how relevant your content is to the question being asked? Maybe so, but in order to explain it to a would-be webmaster, I had to find the words that would most appropriately sum up Google’s prime directive?
After you go through all the SEO checkmarks, take into account the quality and uniqueness of your content, factor in the credibility and authority of your site and backlinks, and factor in the relevancy issue… this was the simple Google Golden Rule I came up with:
“Always think of your visitor first when creating any content for your site.”
This may or may not be what Google is expecting but all indications are pointing in the direction of the “visitor’s experience” and how good you or your content make that experience? Google is serving up a product, it wants the user of their product to be happy with the results. If they’re happy, Google is happy. And if everyone’s happy then the kingdom grows.
Still anything as simple and as complicated as getting top rankings in Google can’t be boiled down to a single catch phrase. You must do your homework and a good starting point would be to thoroughly read Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. Studying and listening to the latest Google webmaster chats may also prove beneficial and helpful.
However, there are still those 200 hoops you have to jump through and you must be extremely careful of how you build your site if you’re trying to please Google. Listen when the king speaks. Observe his rules. Be on your guard, and it helps to become just a little paranoid. And always, always remember, an elephant never forgets.
